After this lesson, you should be able to:

  • Demonstrate the existence of a magnetic field near a current carrying wire using a compass
  • Use an appropriate right-hand-rule to determine the direction of the magnetic field lines around (i) a straight current carrying wire, (ii) a current carrying loop and (iii) a solenoid
  • Draw magnetic field lines around (i) a straight current carrying wire, (ii) a current carrying loop and (iii) a solenoid
  • Compare the magnetic fields of a solenoid and of a bar magnet
  • Discuss qualitatively the possible environmental impact of overhead electrical cables
