Why do learners struggle with maths?

Posted on February 15, 2017 by Top Dog Education

Many subjects can be taught through a story line, whether it is making us imagine a scene of Napoleon marching through the Russian winter, the rising and dropping of the tides or even Coriolanus as a Roman general plundering villages. By using these, the teacher is able to make the subject matter more appealing to learners. This option is not as available for Maths teacher since Mathematics in the classroom is not based on events in time.

Missing out on trips to the shops or opportunities to talk with friends about numbers in their lives, can make learners feel like Maths is unimportant. This will increase the gap between how much the curriculum intends the learner to know and with how much they will actually leave school.

The average learning attention span is 14 minutes. With traditional classroom lessons ranging from 30 – 45 minutes, there is a very good chance that learners could lose concentration and be left behind, through no fault of their own. The children of today are driven by and crave technology and the gadgets that come with it; however, many teachers do not have all these resources at the push of a button. If the learner is left behind, a private Maths tutor is the next step, but they are expensive and they might not have time for you.
